Where does hair for a hair transplant come from?
Hair is most commonly transplanted from the rear of the head It can also be transplanted from other areas depending on the individual needs of each client.
Can you transplant hair that is not yours?
No, it is not possible to transplant hair that is not yours at this point in time. This is due to the complexity of the immune response as the immune system will destroy foreign follicles, even those of a close match, such as from a family member.
What age is best to get a hair transplant?
The minimum age for a hair transplant is typically 25 and older. As a portion of the hair on the head continues to fall out, if a person undergoes a hair transplant too young, there will not be a sufficient amount of hair.
Is medication needed after hair transplant?
After a hair transplant, your plastic surgeon may prescribe you medication to help slow down hair loss. This is not a treatment for hair loss and will stop once you discontinue taking the medication. The purpose of this medication is to block hormones, which will slow down the loss of existing hair without affecting transplanted hair.
How many grafts in a hair transplant?
How many grafts per cm2 during a hair transplant depends on the patient’s design, needs and the condition of the hair. Typically, the less hair and more space to be transplanted, the lower the density, such as 30 grafts per cm2. If there is more existing hair, a higher density (50+ grafts per cm2) may be able to be achieved. Your plastic surgeon will work with you to assess your needs, wishes and expectations.
How long does a hair transplant take?
Current research states a hair transplant should take no longer than 6 hours. While a hair transplant is a meticulous, detailed procedure, once the graph is removed, it no longer has blood supply. Even with the best solutions, the sooner the graph can be returned to the body, the better the result.
Does hair transplant treat every hair disease and condition?
No, a hair transplant cannot solve every problem, and is not suitable for all diseases and conditions. In some cases it may deteriorate the condition. A hair transplant should only be used in necessary cases with proper planning in collaboration with a plastic surgeon.
