Crowns (caps)

CROWN: is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth, to restore shape, size, strength, to improve the appearance of either a weak tooth, broken or misshaped tooth, or a tooth that has been heavily filled. Crowns also form part of a tooth supported bridge, which can treat missing teeth.

Candidates

  • who have good tooth and root structure, but are wanting to correct the shape, colour, shape or bite
  • who wish to improve the aesthetics of their smile or correct misaligned or misshapen teeth

Consultation and Assessment
During your consult at the Hospital, the dentist will review your medical & dental history, pictures, X-rays or OPG and after an oral examination and discussions, procedure and treatments will be determined. If a digital X-Ray/OPG is required (and one has not been provided prior), one will be done during the consultation.

Crowns Procedure
The dentist will file down the tooth, and then take an impression to establish the ideal bite relationship. While the crown is being made (usually 1 - 2 days), you will have a provisional crown made. When the permanent crown is ready, it will be cemented into place and matched to the colour of your own teeth.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns have a metal substructure with a porcelain outside fused to the metal. This type of crown is very strong, however it is not very aesthetic as the metal part of the crown can show through the soft tissue (gum), best used in the posterior (back).
All-porcelain crowns are the most aesthetic and are also very strong. All-porcelain crowns are a better choice for anterior (front) teeth as there is no metal that will show through.

Time: 2 - 5 hours (This is the estimation without any other dental treatments and how many crowns and veneers are to be done)
Number of visits: 2 - 4+ visits (depending on how many crowns and if other treatments are done)
Anaesthesia: Local
Dental clinic: Out patient at the dental clinic
Time Away: Allow for at least 7 - 14+ days in Thailand for appointment, surgery, recovery, post op care, checkup/s and followup/s

Pre Surgery Care

  • Plan to have enough time for appointment, preparation, cementation, follow up, recovery. If you're undertaking any additional facial procedures, please schedule these after all dentistry is complete
  • Maintain good oral hygiene, stop smoking and drinking coloured effervescent beverages eg. coke

Post Surgery & Care

  • Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed
  • If you notice pain or sensitivity when biting down, the crown can be adjusted easily by the dentist
  • A crowned tooth is protected from tooth decay, however it will not protect against gum disease. You should continue practicing good oral hygiene

Results
Aesthetically improved appearance of teeth and a bright smile. Porcelain crowns do not stain so you will be able to maintain a whiter and brighter smile for a long time.
